We looked at fabric art of Kazakh nomads.
The paintings were breathtaking in terms of color. Very vibrant.
My favorite by far was the jewelry exhibit. It included Kazakh, Islamic & Russian jewelry styles. The detail was amazing.
Kazakh husbands would not let their wives cook or even leave the house without their jewelry on. It was believed that silver purified and protected the wearer from evil. It was said to also prevent disease. Some of this jewelry is massive in form but intricate in detail. Stones are usually carnelian. These two are actually rings. In instances of arranged marriages, parents would secretly get together and agree upon marriage of their children. Who your mate was going to be was kept a secret. The brides mother would seek out a master jeweler and tell him about her daughter in terms of personality traits and characteristics. He in turn would fashion the ring using this information to hint about her identity. The finished ring was presented to the mother of the groom who would wear it. You could figure out or have a good idea of who you were marrying by studying the ring. Each ring came with a double looped shank to symbolize the union of two souls.
Stone monks watching TV? Contemporary art.
